The Morris Police Department on Monday, September 21st, released details of the traffic collision that killed Ruth Springer, 59, and injured David Swore, 59, of Fort Charlotte, Florida. The incident took place in Morris, Illinois, on Friday, September 18th.
The accident report disclosed that the two-vehicle crash happened near the Secretary of State’s Office Building on Route 6. Deputy Police Chief Chad Skelton said that the preliminary investigation revealed that an ambulance with emergency lights activated headed eastbound on the roadway for a call.
At the same time, a vehicle that had been going westbound yielded off to the right for the ambulance. The car then entered back into the roadway and attempted to turn left into the Secretary of State’s Office building parking lot.
While making the turn, the vehicle struck the motorcycle operated by Swore. Skelton said that the man was following the ambulance, and the crash impact ejected him and Springer, his passenger from the bike.
Medics airlifted the victims to different hospitals to treat their injuries, and Springer died while undergoing treatment. Swore survived, but there’s no update on his condition at this time. The driver of the vehicle received treatment at Morris Hospital. The investigation is ongoing.
Accidents of this nature are avoidable if drivers exercise due care and caution when on the road. When turning into driveways or driving out, watch the road closely to ensure there’s no oncoming vehicle, make use of the side mirrors, and avoid backing out too quickly.
