Police Continue to Investigate Crash that Killed Fellow Officer

The Simi Valley Police Department is continuing to investigate the crash that killed an officer in the Los Angeles Police Department only a couple hours after midnight on New Year’s.

The crash occurred at approximately 2:10 a.m., in Simi Valley, California, when Heather Monroe, 30, was riding in a black Scion being driven by her 25-year-old wife Alana. Going south on Sycamore Drive, they were hit at the intersection of Sycamore Drive and Cochran Street by another car heading east. The second car was driven by Los Angeles resident and Uber driver Shemisha Burns, and contained one passenger.

Heather Monroe was killed immediately. The other three persons involved in the crash suffered minor injuries. All three were taken to Los Robles Hospital in Thousand Oaks, California, but released soon afterwards.

Simi Valley police have been unable to determine fault. They are unsure whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash, but believe that one of the cars failed to stop at a red light, and are currently trying to obtain nearby surveillance footage.

Police are also investigating the cause of death, as it appears that Monroe was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash, and that airbags deployed properly.

Monroe was off duty at the time of the crash. Her colleagues in the Los Angeles Police Department have expressed their grief over the tragedy.
