A fatal car accident indirectly led to a second serious crash as a motorcycle officer rushed to the scene, in a bizarre series of events in Pomona early Tuesday morning.
The first crash happened at approximately 6:35 a.m., in the 2200 block of North Garey Avenue. Pedestrian Charles Washington, 60, was killed in a hit-and-run accident. After leaving the scene, the driver later returned and admitted his responsibility.
En route to the scene of this accident, a Pomona Police Department motorcycle officer was hit by a Ford Explorer eight blocks away, in the 1400 block of North Garey Avenue. The accident occurred when the Ford turned left into oncoming traffic. The Ford driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with authorities.
The injured officer, who has not been named, was 32 and a nine-year veteran of the Pomona Police Department. He was taken to the nearby LAC+USC Medical Center with a critical head injury.
Following the two incidents, Garey Avenue was closed. California Highway Patrol is treating the hit-and-run crash as an active criminal investigation. In the second crash, CHP is still unsure whether drugs or alcohol played a role, and are also investigating the possibility of distracted driving.
