Three lanes and an onramp were closed on southbound Interstate 805 in National City on Tuesday, after a semi truck caught fire.
The fire, which started at about 2 p.m., appears to have started when a mattress being carried by the vehicle in front of the truck flew off and became trapped under the wheels of the truck.
Fortunately, the driver was able to escape his vehicle without injury, but the truck was completely destroyed by the fire, which also burned through the 50 gallons of diesel fuel that were being carried in the truck’s storage tanks.
As firefighters worked to put out the blaze, traffic was backed up for miles, and at least one lane of Interstate 805, along with the nearby onramp at Plaza Boulevard, were still closed at 7 p.m. that evening.
Following the fire, the California Department of Transportation also issued an inspection of a nearby bridge, as a safety precaution.
