47-Year-Old Man Dies in Big-Rig Crash on I-10 near Chiriaco Summit

A man died early Thursday morning in a big rig crash on Interstate 10 near Chiriaco Summit.

The Coroner’s office has identified the victim as 47-year-old Sergio Ramirez Morales, of Villa Nueva Guatemala.

According to California Highway Patrol Officer, Mike Radford, the accident happened along the eastbound lanes of I-10, west of Hayfield Road near Chiriaco Summit around 4:03 a.m. Morales was driving a 1996 Chevy S-10 pick up truck, towing a Nissan Sentra. Morales’ truck was side-swiped by a 2016 Freightliner as it was changing lanes, moving from the fast lane to the slow lane.

The Freightliner was driven by a 31-year-old man from Armona in Central California. According to the CHP statement, the impact of the collision caused the pick up truck to separate from the Nissan and rollover, landing partially under the big-rig. The vehicles landed on the right shoulder of the desert freeway. Morales was pronounced dead at the scene.
