KY Man Killed in Collision with Semi on Interstate 64

Early Friday morning, 46-year-old Derron Gentry of Ashland, KY was killed when he rear-ended a semi on Interstate 64, a mile west of the Bluford exit in Jefferson County.

According to Illinois State Police, Gentry had been traveling westbound on I-64 in a Chrysler Voyager van when he ran into the back of a semi trailer as it was pulling back onto the road after being stopped on the right shoulder. Police say that the crash occurred at around 12:19 a.m.

The semi was driven by 35-year-old Las Vegas resident, Kiflu Mogos. According to police, Mogos had parked the semi on the right shoulder of I-64 near milepost 88, and as he was preparing to re-enter the road, he activated his left turn signal while accelerating on the shoulder to gain speed before merging into the right lane.

Gentry’s van collided with the back of the semi trailer and he was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Mogos was uninjured in the accident. Police say charges are pending.
