Kevin Wilson, 56 of La Mesa died after a hit-and-run driver struck him on Monday morning, January 20, 2020.

Wilson was riding his bicycle on Dehesa Road in a rural area east of El Cahon near Singing Hills Golf Course.

Craig Wendell Nelson, 56, of Julian, was driving east on that road in his 1993 Mitsubishi Mirage. Just east of Willow Glen Drive, he veered into the bike lane and struck Wilson at about 10:45 a.m.

Paramedics transported Kevin Wilson to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego. Doctors there pronounced him dead.

Nelson kept driving after the collision. He later pulled over and abandoned the Mirage on Sloane Canyon Road. He continued fleeing on foot. A helicopter search crew spotted him in a nearby brushy area.

San Diego Police arrested him on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and hit and run. Nelson was booked into San Diego Central Jail where he was held on $50,000 bail. His arraignment is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, January 23.
