59-Year Old Barbara Yerkes Killed in House Fire in Algonquin

Barbara Yerkes

When someone dies in a house fire, it’s always tragic. And it’s horrible to imagine someone all alone in their home when the fire starts. Sadly, this was the case for 59-year old Barbara Yerkes, a woman from Algonquin, Illinois.

At about 3 pm on Thursday, the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills fire department responded to a house fire on Alice Lane. When they arrived, the ranch-style home was in flames. The fire fighters went to the back of the house where they found the sole occupant, Barbara Yerkes. The reports did not confirm the medical condition of the victim at the time the firefighters arrived.

Yerkes was the only one in the house at the time of the fire. The authorities didn’t report that the victim had called and reported the fire. It must’ve been a third-party who saw the house in flames and called the local fire department.

Yerkes was rescued from the fire and taken to Northwest Huntley Hospital. Her injuries were so severe that she was later flown to Loyola Hospital. Unfortunately, she died the next morning at 9:03 and was pronounced dead.

Whenever someone in Cook County dies from anything other than natural causes, an autopsy is done. The autopsy is scheduled to be done this week. The authorities don’t expect foul play to be involved. However, they still don’t know what caused the fire. All they know at this point is that Yerkes was alone at the time of the incident and that the fire started somewhere in the front of the house.
