The details of an accident that occurred over the weekend were released by authorities on Tuesday, February 18.
24-year-old Paul Joseph Garcia was arrested while he was at the South Austin Beer Garden after he entered the establishment and tried to buy a drink. Garcia was barefoot and covered in blood. Witnesses reported that there was a corpse in the front seat of his car that had apparently come through his windshield.
Garcia had gotten out of his car and walked into the bar like he was completely oblivious to the fact that he had just killed a person with his vehicle.
Police arrived at South Austin Beer Garden on Menchaca Road around 10:30 p.m. where they found a very intoxicated Garcia. In the front seat of his white 2014 Ford Focus was the pedestrian that he had hit about a half-mile up the road.
Garcia had been driving down the road at a high rate of speed without his headlights on when he hit the pedestrian. The pedestrian’s name has yet to be released.
The affidavit of his arrest described the body to be severely mangled. The person he hit had suffered serious head injuries and parts of their extremities had been severed from their body, which police found inside the car and in the road where the accident happened.
Garcia is currently facing charges of intoxication manslaughter and causing an accident involving injury. An intoxication manslaughter charge could put Garcia in prison for a term of two to 20 years.
