On Wednesday evening, February 19th, an accident on Highway 109 left a male teenager dead. The Jersey County Coroner’s Office has identified him as 18-year-old, David J. Carroll, of Jerseyville, Illinois.
The coroner’s report showed that the teenager succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the crash. The cause of death was listed as an accident, and there’s no toxicology report.
The accident that took Carroll’s life happened south of McClusky Road. According to the Illinois State Police, the deceased was trying to negotiate a curve when he lost control of his car.
He went off the road and wrecked his car against a tree. Authorities received news of the crash at about 5:16 p.m., and by the time they got to the scene, Carroll was unresponsive.
The deceased was taken out of his car for emergency medical attention. Efforts to revive the teenager proved abortive, and by 5:55 p.m., the medic at the scene pronounced him dead.
Teenage drivers get involved in accidents a lot in Illinois. Statistics have shown that most car crashes involving teens happen between the ages of 16 and 19 and within the first six months of getting their driver’s license.
Driver’s distraction causes more than 75% of teen accidents. Most young drivers’ text while driving, and having fellow teen passengers also contributes to the distraction they encounter.
Two in every teenage accident that ends in death affect the male gender, and more than half of all teen fatalities happen on Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays. Authorities have asked teenage drivers to exercise caution while on the road and avoid all forms of distractions.
