An accident just after the stroke of midnight on Thursday, February 20th, left 20-year-old Jorge Anthony Garcia dead. The young man was on a joyride when the accident occurred on the intersection of Evers Road and Callaghan Road, San Antonio, Texas.
Garcia was driving a Mitsubishi car that was reported stolen last Friday, February 14th. According to the San Antonio Police Department, an eye witness called about the young man driving recklessly and doing doughnuts.
The caller — a female — said she saw the Mitsubishi hit another vehicle and take off. She tried following the car, but lost Garcia after a while because he was driving beyond the speed limit.
Minutes later, the police received another call from a second witness. The caller reported a single-vehicle accident close to the car wash at Callaghan, on the northwest side.
A preliminary investigation by the police uncovered that the deceased had crossed the intersection of Evers Road and Callaghan Road without slowing down. He ended up crashing against a utility pole.
The Mitsubishi got pushed into a small retaining wall, went airborne, slammed into a tree, and rolled. Garcia was not wearing a seatbelt and got partially ejected from the car.
He suffered severe trauma, and there was nothing the police could do for him. The medic at the scene pronounced him dead, and his body got transported to the coroner’s office for an autopsy.
The SAPD is still investigating the accident and what led the deceased to go on a midnight joyride. So far, they have not mentioned the presence of drugs or alcohol, and are awaiting a toxicology report.
