In an unfortunate accident that took place on Saturday, February 29, one man lost his life. The incident took place on the I-96 in Ionia County. The traffic on the road had slowed down and was congested because of another unrelated accident that had taken place earlier. It was then that a speeding driver crashed into several vehicles from the rear, causing the fatality.

The accident took place late in the day, at around 7 p.m. on Saturday evening. According to the details shared by the Michigan State Police, an accident had previously occurred on the I-96 late on Saturday. As the authorities conducted rescue, cleanup and investigations at the site of the crash, the traffic became congested. A speeding driver who was coming in the same lane didn’t see the traffic congestion ahead. As a result, he was unable to reduce speed when he closed in on the traffic. The driver then hit multiple vehicles in the rear, causing significant damage.

Kevin Nicholas Coulter, 29, of Grand Rapids was a passenger in the rear seat of one of these vehicles. As the speeding driver rear-ended his vehicle, Coulter sustained critical injuries. He later died of his injuries.

The identity of the speeding driver has not been revealed by the police so far. According to the available details, the speeding driver is a 34-year-old from Detroit. It is quite likely that the driver will face charges as his negligence was a key factor in the crash.

It is typical for a driver to be charged with moving violation causing death in such a case. The crime carries a penalty of a prison sentence of up to one year. In addition, the convicted driver may also be fined up to $2,000. It remains to be seen if the police choose to bring these charges against the Detroit driver who caused the crash in this case.
