Michigan State Police has now identified the three team members of the Ultimate Frisbee team who died in a fatal crash. The fatal crash took place on Saturday, February 29. MSP released the identities of the three teammates on Tuesday, March 3.
The three victims have been identified as Andrew Piet, 24, of Grand Rapids, Kevin Nicholas Coulter, 29, also of Grand Rapids, and Michael Cannon, 24, of Harbor Springs.
According to the details shared by the authorities, the accident took place when a 2018 Honda CR-V rear-ended the 2005 Toyota Camry being driven by Piet. Andrew Piet had slowed down due to the traffic congestion caused by a previous accident on the eastbound lanes of I-96. The driver of the Honda CR-V failed to slow down and coming up behind Piet’s vehicle, he struck the vehicle in the rear.
Piet was accompanied by his two teammates at the time. His Camry crashed into the rear of another vehicle after the initial collision. All three teammates suffered critical injuries as a result of the crash. Kevin Nicholas Coulter died on the scene of the accident. Cannon remained under treatment at a hospital. However, he couldn’t recover from the injuries and died as well.
According to the preliminary investigations by state police, speeding and failure to reduce speed to avoid collision caused the accident. The driver of the Honda CR-V which caused the crash was not injured in the incident, although a passenger traveling with the driver was injured.
