Alfredo Antonio Pantoja, a Wilson, Texas resident, is dead after a crash just outside Lubbock on Sunday night.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the 40-year-old was driving south on U.S. Highway 87 in the area of Woodrow Road when he failed to stay in his lane and crashed into a guardrail.

He was taken to University Medical Center for injuries and he later died at the hospital. Texas DPS said he was not wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred.

It is not yet known what caused Alfredo Antonio Pantoja’s vehicle to leave the roadway but investigations into the crash are ongoing.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident and no other injuries were reported.

Single vehicle accidents can have several contributing factors. Sometimes the driver is responsible since they were speeding, fatigued or driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

However, environmental or roadway characteristics can also have a role to play. These include sharp curves, poor drainage, inclement weather, and narrow road shoulders or lanes.

Vehicle malfunction or defective car parts can also cause a vehicle to leave the road and crash.

Texas leads the country in traffic deaths and on average, ten people die in traffic accidents every day. Around 3,600 people die every year.

The Texas Department of Transportation has set a goal of reducing fatal crashes by 50 percent by 2035 and ending all fatalities by 2050. The authorities have proposed lower speed limits, improved street signage, and state-wide hands-free laws.
