Family Mourns Death of Brandon McGhie Following Wrong Way Crash

Relatives of 26-year-old Brandon McGhie are reflecting on his life after he was killed in a head-on collision early on Saturday morning.

He was heading home around 2:20 a.m. on US 290 near W. Tidwell when he was struck by a truck driving the wrong way.

McGhie died at the scene while the truck driver, 25-year-old Jose Turrubiartes, died in hospital.

McGhie’s siblings said their brother had a twin and he was the youngest of five children. They recalled that he had a kind heart and a big personality. He earned his master’s degree in Public Health from Tulane University last May and was planning to do a doctorate.

Brandon McGhie grew up with a blood disorder and his family said he was inspired to pursue a career in public health after spending lots of time at Texas Children’s Hospital.

He was working at that hospital as a research coordinator.

His sister Shimeka Graves said McGhie’s death would be hard on the family.

Houston police are uncertain about why Turrubiartes was driving the wrong way. However, they said they received several 911 calls about his driving and officers were trying to catch up with him before the fatal collision.

McGhie’s relatives said they were not angry about how McGhie died but they were grateful for the way the entire situation ended. Graves said the other driver’s death brought some closure although the family felt bad for Turrubiartes’ family.

Meanwhile, McGhie’s mother said she believed her son had fulfilled his purpose in life.
