The family of a 69-year-old man who was killed in a February 24 crash is suing three people who were allegedly racing when the accident occurred.
Howard Wright’s family is also suing the car club where the suspects are believed to be members.
The family is seeking more than $1 million in monetary damages, according to the wrongful death lawsuit which was filed last Friday by Liggett Law Firm.
The crash happened shortly before 3 p.m. in the 7500 block of Slide Road.
The lawsuit alleges that three men who belonged to the Muscle Mayhem club were illegally racing along the road.
The men have been identified as Anthony Martin, 28; Luis Salinas, 24; and Xavier Montalvo, 19.
Montalvo was driving a 2018 Dodge Charger while racing against Salinas and Martin.
They were going south in the 7400 block of Slide Road and their vehicles were travelling at 50 miles per hour above the speed limit.
Howard Wright had stopped at a stop sign and was waiting to turn left at the junction of 75th and Slide Road. As he tried to turn, Montalvo crashed into his vehicle.
According to the lawsuit, Muscle Mayhem is a social group whose members race against each other in Lubbock’s streets.
The club reportedly uses its online forum and membership to help organize the races and also provides an online forum for encouraging more illegal races and recruiting members.
Montalvo’s arrest warrant said he was going 94 miles per hour at the time of the crash.
He was arrested for racing on a highway causing death and manslaughter while Salinas and Martin were arrested on warrants for racing on a highway causing death.
