Police: Joan Lowry Killed In Head-On Crash In Gurnee

Authorities have identified the woman killed in a two-vehicle, head-on wreck Thursday in Gurnee.

Joan Lowry, 69, of Lake Villa, died from injuries sustained in the crash, Gurnee Police Department officials said in a press release. Lowry reportedly was a resident of Lindenhurst at the time of her death.

Authorities said Lowry was a passenger in a vehicle driven east on Washington Street at about 4:50 p.m. Thursday. The vehicle’s driver, a 71-year-old man whose name was not included in the press release, crossed the center line near Cemetery Road and struck an oncoming vehicle head-on.

“The head-on collision caused extensive damage to both vehicles,” Gurnee police officials wrote in a press release issued shortly after the crash.

Lowry was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Gurnee Police Department press release. The driver of her vehicle, also of Lake Villa, and the driver of the other vehicle, a 37-year-old Grayslake woman whose name authorities did not disclose, were taken to area hospitals for treatment.

Gurnee police continue to investigate the incident, which shut down traffic on Washington Street for about four hours. The Major Crash Assistance Team also responded to the scene and assisted with the investigation.
