A man has been charged with reckless driving and driving under the influence following the death of 30-year-old Angel Nieto, according to new information.
Nieto died at University Medical Center on February 5 after he was involved in a crash on January 24 at Christy Lane and Monroe Avenue.
The Clark County coroner’s office had ruled that his death was a homicide.
The police usually announce traffic-related fatalities, but they did not publicize Nieto’s death in February. It was not immediately clear if the incident will be counted as a traffic fatality.
However, the Metropolitan Police Department revealed on Wednesday that 42-year-old Marques Graybeal was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on February 29.
He is accused of DUI resulting in death and reckless driving resulting in death or significant bodily harm.
The coroner’s office said Nieto’s death resulted from blunt force head trauma.
Graybeal’s arrest report said officers were called to the crash scene around 10:55 p.m. They discovered that a GMC Sierra and a Kia Sorento had crashed into a wall.
Nieto was found slumped over in the GMC.
Investigations by detectives revealed that prior to the crash, Angel Nieto had shot at Marques Graybeal while Graybeal was in his Kia at the intersection of Harris Avenue and Christy.
Nieto fled the scene and Graybeal followed him.
According to the police report, the Kia later collided with Nieto’s tow hitch and this caused him to lose control of his vehicle. He crashed into the block wall.
Police said Graybeal was under the influence of alcohol and methamphetamine at the time of the crash.
A preliminary hearing in his DUI case is scheduled for March 17. Graybeal remained in jail on Wednesday with bail set at $100,000.
