Authorities have identified the two people killed in a high-speed, single-vehicle wreck Sunday morning in Lake County.
Angel Calderon, 23, and Miguel Mandujano, 27, both of Beach Park, died at the scene of the wreck, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Autopsies conducted after the wreck suggest each died of blunt-force injuries, coroner’s office officials said.
Authorities said Calderon was driving north with Mandujano in the passenger’s seat on Delany Road at 6:45 a.m. approaching the intersection with Russell Road. Delaney Road dead-ends at Russell Road, forcing drivers to either turn left or right.
Calderon, however, failed to turn adequately and apparently drove off the road a high speed and struck an embankment, which sent it flying about 200 feet through the air, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.
Calderon’s vehicle actually was launched over Russell Road before it struck the ground, sheriff’s department officials reported. Authorities were able to identify the victims Sunday, though the names weren’t immediately released publicly to allow officials to notify the men’s next-of-kin.
It’s unclear what led to the crash, though “excessive speed” likely was a factor, the sheriff’s department reported. Toxicology testing is underway, coroner’s office officials told Chicago-area media outlets.
Agencies investigating the wreck include the coroner’s office andthe sheriff’s department’s Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
