Authorities: Arika Smith, Diane Wagner Die In 3-Vehicle Crash Near Stratford

Two women were killed and another person injured in a crash Sunday evening on the interstate in Sherman County near Stratford, according to authorities.

Arika Smith, 34, of Guymon, and Diane Wagner, 55, of Butternut, Wis., were pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck, according to officials from the Texas Department of Public Safety. Wagner’s passenger, Gregory Wagner, 57, was seriously injured in the crash, authorities said.

Officials from the state agency said Smith was driving south on U.S. 54 at about 6:15 p.m. Sunday when she attempted to pass a semi-tractor trailer. While Smith was attempting to pass the truck, her vehicle was struck by a northbound vehicle operated by Diane Wagner.

The force of the crash reportedly launched Smith’s vehicle into the air before it crashed into the truck trailer. The driver of the semi, whom authorities did not identify publicly, was not injured, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Authorities said both Diane Wagner and Smith were pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck. Gregory Wagner reportedly was airlifted from the scene for treatment of injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

It’s unclear whether other factors are believed to have contributed to the wreck.
