A man who left the scene of a fatal accident in Harris County, Texas last Sunday has been caught by police.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said he was 33-year-old Arturo Perez-Gallegos.
Preliminary reports showed that he was driving a truck along FM 1960 near Willowbrook Mall when he hit an unnamed pedestrian who was wheeling a bicycle along the street.
Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman said when sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene, the man had already left.
The victim’s body was found in a ditch and it was taken to the coroner’s office. Officers then began to gather debris from the crash scene to help them identify the vehicle.
As they were doing that, someone approached them and said they saw a disabled vehicle in a gas station’s parking lot. The witness said he saw a man assessing the damage on a Chevrolet pickup truck.
Herman said the officers went to check out the information and as soon as Perez-Gallegos saw them, he ran into a bathroom.
He was later arrested, and officers identified him as a Mexican national who had previously been deported.
Perez-Gallegos was arrested in 2016 after he broke into the apartment belonging to the mother of his child and assaulted her. He spent six days in jail.
The officers discovered a young child in the damaged vehicle.
A sample of Arturo Perez-Gallegos’ blood showed that he was intoxicated while driving.
He was charged with failing to stop and render aid and driving while intoxicated with a child passenger. Perez-Gallegos’ was taken to the Harris County Jail.
