A pedestrian was struck by a van and killed at the intersection of Buffalo Drive and Washington Avenue on Wednesday night.
The accident occurred around 7:45 p.m.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and Nevada Highway Patrol responded to the crash in the northwest Las Vegas Valley.
Trooper Travis Smaka said the crash involved a van that was heading southbound on Buffalo Drive toward Summerlin Parkway. The vehicle hit a man who was walking in the travel lane. He was not on a marked crosswalk.
Smaka said the man was pronounced dead on the scene.
His identity had not been released up to Friday. It is expected that the Clark County Coroner’s Office will name the victim after his next of kin has been notified.
NHP said they did not suspect that the driver was impaired. That person’s name was not revealed and there was no word on whether they would be cited or charged.
Roads in the area were closed while investigators worked.
Las Vegas is considered one of the most dangerous spots for pedestrian accidents. This is partly because of the millions of visitors the city gets each year.
Lots of the people move around on foot and this leads to a higher number of pedestrian-motor vehicle accidents. These crashes can be deadly since pedestrians have nothing to protect them.
In February, there were 19 pedestrian fatalities on Nevada’s roads. Only 15 pedestrian deaths were recorded in February 2019.
We will update this story as soon as police releases the name of the accident victim.
