Alex Panos Hit and Killed by Car in Western Las Vegas

The Clark County Coroner’s Office has identified the elderly man who died after he was hit by a car in west Las Vegas last Wednesday.

He is 91-year-old Alex Panos whose home city could not be immediately ascertained. Panos was struck near Buffalo Drive and Washington Avenue around 7:45 p.m.

The coroner’s office ruled his death an accident and said he died of blunt force injuries.

The Nevada Highway Patrol will continue to investigate the crash, but officers do not believe the driver was impaired.

However, no details were released about how the accident occurred. The driver’s name was not revealed.

Between 2008 and 2017, 601 people were struck and killed while walking on Nevada’s streets.  Most of these fatal pedestrian-vehicle accidents occurred in Clark County.

In its 2019 Dangerous by Design report, Smart Growth America ranked Nevada at number 11 in pedestrian fatalities. The state recorded 2.12 pedestrian fatalities per 100, 000 people over the period under consideration. The national average was 1.55 pedestrian fatalities per 100, 000 people.

In 2017, Clark County recorded its highest number of pedestrian fatalities ever. That year, 78 people died while walking on the county’s roads. In 2018, data from the Nevada Department of Transportation showed there were 63 pedestrian deaths.

Research shows that pedestrian-involved accidents occur disproportionately in lower-income, minority neighborhoods located around communities with roads that are designed to move vehicles quickly.
