Serious Medical Issue Suspected in Crash that Killed Pamela Bartlett

A Texarkana, Texas, woman has died, and another suffered slight injuries following a crash that occurred around 8 p.m. on Friday on South Cowhorn Creek Loop.

Police identified the deceased as 64-year-old Pamela Bartlett.

She was injured when her 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier rear-ended a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox driven by 36-year-old Katherine Schmidt.

Traffic investigators from the Texarkana, Texas Police Department determined that Pamela Bartlett was heading north on South Cowhorn Creek Loop when she swerved into the turn lane and crashed into Schmidt’s vehicle.

Schmidt was also traveling north, and she was in the turn lane waiting to make a left turn into the parking lot of Newk’s Eatery when the crash occurred.

Investigators are of the opinion that Bartlett suffered a medical issue right before the crash.

She was taken to St. Michael Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries about an hour after the accident.

Schmidt was said to have suffered minor injuries, but she reportedly declined medical attention at the scene.

Officers will continue to investigate the accident, but no citations are expected to be issued.

Heart conditions, seizure disorders, and diabetes can all cause a driver to lose control of their vehicle and crash into another vehicle or an individual.

A 2009 study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that crashes caused by medical emergencies accounted for only 1.3 percent of drivers included in the National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Survey. Older drivers were more likely to suffer medical emergencies than young or middle-aged motorists.
