Benjamin Klassen Killed In Single-Vehicle Crash Near Seminole

Authorities have identified the teen killed Sunday night in a rollover crash in Gaines County.

Benjamin Klassen, 17, of Seminole, was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck, according to car accident reports from the Texas Department of Public Safety. Another teen also was injured in the single-vehicle crash, authorities said.

Troopers said Klassen was driving a pickup truck south on Texas 214 at about 10:15 p.m. Sunday when he approached a curve in the road a few miles outside of Seminole. The truck went off the roadway, crashed into a utility pole and rolled, car accident reports state.

According to preliminary investigative reports, Klassen was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the wreck. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.

Klassen’s passenger, described in car accident reports only as a 16-year-old girl from Seminole, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries that aren’t believed to be life-threatening, authorities said.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said they believe Klassen was driving at an unsafe speed at the time of the wreck. They have not said whether other factors are thought to have contributed to the crash.

According to an online obituary, Klassen worked a farmer.

“Benjamin had a very kind heart and was friends with everyone,” loved ones wrote in the obituary. “In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was loved dearly and will be truly missed.”
