Authorities said a 1-year-old girl died Friday night in a hit-and-run crash in Harris County.
The infant, identified by Harris County Sheriff’s Department officials as Amiyah Buck, was pronounced dead at a hospital. She was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Marvin Buck, 55, who also suffered injuries in the crash, according to car accident reports.
Authorities said Marvin Buck was westbound in the 4700 block of Aldine Mail Route at about 11 p.m. when he was struck head-on by an eastbound pickup truck, car accident reports stated. Authorities said the driver of the pickup, later identified as Sergio M. Iglesias, 35, then fled the scene on foot.
Amiyah Buck, who was wearing a seatbelt but was not in a car seat at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, deputies said. Marvin Buck also was hospitalized, though an updated condition report wasn’t available in car accident reports released Saturday night.
Iglesias was arrested by deputies a short time later. Investigators said Iglesias showed signs of impairment.
Specific charges or citations were not announced by the Harris County Sheriff’s Department on Saturday.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez issued a warning on social media Saturday afternoon.
“In the last few days, we’ve seen two small children … lose their lives in separate crashes,” Gonzalez wrote on Twitter. “Neither child was properly restrained (and) all other parties survived. Traffic crashes are a leading killer of children. Car seats save lives and prevent injuries.”
