Joel Lamont Torres Arrested after Passenger Gets Injured in Street Race Crash

San Marcos police have arrested a San Antonio man who they say wrecked his car while racing down the highway on Tuesday. His unnamed passenger suffered critical injuries, according to accident reports.

The driver has been identified as 21-year-old Joel Lamont Torres. Police said the crash occurred on IH-35 in the area of Posey Road, near mile marker 199 around 4:30 p.m.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a blue 2014 Nissan 370Z racing against another vehicle.

The Nissan swerved off the highway a little past the Posey Road exit and hit a dirt pile. The car launched more than 100 feet into the air and then rolled over.

Torres’ passenger, 20-year-old Jerrinque Lamiya Wilson from San Antonio, was thrown from the vehicle. She landed about 70 feet past where the vehicle came to a stop.

Police said Wilson was not wearing a seatbelt.

Interim Police Chief Bob Klett said preliminary evidence indicated the Nissan was traveling at 81 miles per hour just before it launched over the dirt piles. He added that witnesses said the vehicle was going at more than 100 mph on IH-35.

Wilson suffered major injuries and she was taken to Ascension Seton Hays in Kyle by Hays County EMS.

Torres received minor injuries. He was wearing a seatbelt. Police arrested him on suspicion of racing on a highway causing serious bodily injury. This is a second-degree felony in Texas.

Torres was able to post $15,000 bail and he was released from the Hays County Jail.

Investigations into the crash continue.
