A Bowie High School football player is in hospital with serious injuries after he was involved in a major car crash on Saturday in South Austin. While the family has commented on the incident, no official accident reports were immediately available online.
Seventeen-year-old Evan Mallett received teardrop fractures to his C4 and C5 vertebrae, broke multiple bones in his back, and suffered lung injuries.
Mallett is paralyzed. His stepmother Andrea Khawaja-Mallett said he was at St. David’s South Austin Medical Center and he was not breathing on his own.
She said neurosurgeon Dr. Desh Sahni indicated that Evan has a 10 to 25 percent chance of regaining some use of his hands and feet.
However, Khawaja-Mallett said the family was praying and believing that Evan’s condition would improve even more.
Bowie football coach Jeff Ables said two other students received minor injuries in the accident.
Footballer Brandon Flores was treated and discharged on Sunday while baseball player Matt Garcia was allowed to go home on Monday.
Mallet will eventually be transferred to TIRR Memorial Hermann in Houston so he can start rehabilitation.
Mallett was driving the vehicle that was involved in the crash. He, Flores and Garcia were reportedly on their way to Chick-fil-A when the Acura TL drifted off Texas 45 and hit a light pole.
The teen’s father, Mike Mallett, said no one in the car was drinking but he did not indicate what caused the crash.
It is not known whether anyone involved in the matter will be seeking advice from a car accident lawyer.
A GoFundMe page has been launched on Facebook to help raise money for Mallett’s medical expenses. The family has set a goal of $75,000.
If more information is published on the accident, it will be provided in subsequent accident reports.
