Cyclist, Gary Dean Satterfield, Struck and Killed By Passing Vehicle in Tyler

An elderly bicycle rider turned up dead in the Tyler area of Texas after he was rear-ended by a vehicle traveling across a road intersection. The tragic collision took place on Thursday afternoon, April 30, and would require the involvement of a bicycle accident attorney.

The Tyler Police Department reported that the cyclist, identified as Gary Dean Satterfield, 65, of Tyler, was killed at about 3 pm, at the intersection of Cumberland Road and Old Jacksonville Highway.

Testimonies from eyewitnesses confirmed that the cyclist was pedaling his bicycle on the sidewalk, heading west on Cumberland Road.

Just as the cyclist entered the intersection at Old Jacksonville Highway, a black BMW moving through the north travel lanes of Old Jacksonville veered into the interchange at the same moment and ran over the cyclist.

The accounts ascertained that the BMW entered the intersection on a green light, and therefore had the right of way, while the fatal victim ran the red light and failed to yield to oncoming traffic.

Passersby attempted to save Satterfield, administering life-saving measures on him, but he eventually gave in to his injuries before paramedics arrived.

Following the crash, all northbound lanes on Jacksonville Highway were blocked, and traffic was redirected to other routes.

The fatal collision is being investigated by the Tyler Police Department. Although Satterfield appears to hold the greater liability in the crash as he entered the intersection on a red light, a bicycle accident attorney can conduct an independent investigation to unveil new evidence.
