Hanna Mccree Killed, Derrick Jackson Injured In UTV Crash In Gallatin County

Authorities said a woman was killed a man injured Friday evening in a utility vehicle crash in Gallatin County.

Hanna P. McCree, 23, of Herrin, died as a result of injuries sustained in the wreck, according to car accident reports from the Illinois State Police. She was a passenger in a utility vehicle operated by Derrick J. Jackson, 30, of Elizabethtown, who also reportedly was injured in the crash.

Authorities said Jackson was driving north on Forestry Road in the Pounds Hollow Recreation Area at about 5:20 P.M. Friday when he lost control of his utility vehicle. Car accident reports state Jackson went onto the road’s shoulder, overcorrected and then crashed into the tree.

Neither McCree nor Jackson were wearing seatbelts at the time, troopers reported. Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene, but McCree was pronounced dead before she could be transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Car accident reports state Jackson was taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries that aren’t believed to be life-threatening.

Authorities said it is not yet clear what caused Jackson to lose control of the vehicle. However, they do believe he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the wreck.

The U.S. Forestry Service cited Jackson for operating an ATV in a recreation area. Jackson also was cited by troopers for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The Illinois State Police continues to investigate the crash. It wasn’t clear Sunday whether additional charges or citations are expected.
