A 20-year-old was killed on Sunday night after he was involved in a crash with a vehicle driven by a man who was evading the police.
According to accident reports, the deceased has been identified as Asante Sebastian Contreras.
San Antonio police said his Ford Mustang was hit head-on around 9:45 p.m. at the Northeast Loop 410 and northbound Interstate 35 interchange.
Contreras died on the spot.
The incident started when SAPD’s Street Crimes Unit tried to serve a warrant for a man who was involved in a shooting.
That man fled from police and drove his vehicle the wrong way onto the northbound ramp connecting Loop 410 and I-35.
The chase began in the area of Highway 151 and speeds reached up to 80 miles per hour as the suspect and police went through the West and Southeast sides of town.
The suspect’s car caught on fire after the crash, but responders were able to pull him out of the vehicle. He was taken to hospital. He faces charges of murder and evading arrest.
The man’s name has not yet been released.
Fatal crashes have continued to occur in Texas despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Vehicular traffic has been slashed in half and millions of Texans are at home, but the trend has continued.
In March, road fatalities decreased by only 21 percent even though people were driving approximately half as many miles. Many of the crashes are caused by excessive speeds.
In some cases, families may be able to seek compensation from the at-fault driver with help from a car accident lawyer.
