Authorities have identified the man killed early Monday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash near an Ottawa County gas station.
Richard Peel, 76, of Leroy, died as a result of the crash, which was reported just before 1 p.m. Monday on Butternut Drive, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department. At least two other people also suffered injuries as a result of the wreck, according to car accident reports.
Authorities said Peel was attempting to leave the parking lot of a gas station on Butternut Drive near Shadybrook Drive at 12:55 p.m. Monday when he pulled onto the road in front of another vehicle. The other vehicle, a pickup truck, crashed into Peel’s vehicle, according to car accident reports.
Peel died as a result of the crash, authorities said. His passenger, identified in car accident reports only as a 74-year-old Leroy woman, was transported to an area hospital for treatment of wounds not thought to be life-threatening.
The driver of the truck, identified by authorities only as a 47-year-old Hudsonville man, suffered minor injuries, but declined transport to a hospital for treatment, authorities said.
The crash remains under investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department. No citations or charges have been issued, though investigators said it appears that Peel failed to yield the right-of-way to the other driver.
The Holland Township Fire Department also assisted at the scene of the wreck, according to car accident reports.
