Filiberto Beltran Dies in Rolling Vehicle Accident

Quin Banta

A man suffered fatal injuries on Wednesday night when the pickup truck he was working on rolled over him.

Filiberto Beltran became El Paso’s 25th traffic fatality for the year, the El Paso Police Department said in accident reports.

Beltran was helping his neighbour Rafael Casares with his Ford F-250 at the intersection of Lackland Street and Nashville Avenue when the incident occurred. It happened in the area of Austin High School.

The truck had a mechanical problem and investigations revealed that Casares put it in neutral while he and Beltran tried to start it from the engine bay.

They were standing in front of the vehicle. When the men got the vehicle started, it began to roll forward.

Casares managed to move out of the way but Beltran couldn’t do so in time. The vehicle pushed him to the ground and ran over him, causing fatal injuries.

Police said the vehicle was not properly secured and this contributed to the accident.

However, they did not reveal whether Casares would be charged or cited.

He and Beltran lived in the 3800 block of Memphis, El Paso.

Initially, it was thought that Beltran was a pedestrian who was struck by a truck.

Police indicated that the accident would be considered a traffic-related death in spite of the way it occurred.

At this point last year, there were 23 traffic fatalities.

Information will be provided on accident-related injuries and deaths as they occur in Texas.
