Following the identification of a patrol officer struck and injured by a DUI motorist in Port Arthur, Texas, the involvement of a top accident attorney is inevitable. The Texas Department of Public Safety named the lawman on Monday, May 18, as Officer Rondal Bingham, of the Port Arthur Police Department.
Authorities recorded the incident just after 10:40 p.m. on Friday, May 15, on the 5100 block of 7th Street. Bingham and another officer reportedly tried to avoid the collision, but the suspect’s vehicle struck Bingham before he could clear off its path.
The incident kicked off when the two officers responded to a noise disturbance call in the area. The lawmen were investigating the noise complaint when one of them noticed a speeding vehicle approaching them. Troopers said the officers were at the time standing beside their cruiser in a grassy patch on 7th Street.
According to the reports, the 1995 Chevrolet pickup truck continued in their direction without attempting to stop or slow down. The cops then tried to jump out of harm’s way to avoid the car.
However, the pickup collided with their patrol vehicle, before striking Officer Rondal Bingham. The driver failed to pull over after the collision, but continued off the road at a high rate of speed, coming to rest only after crashing into a tree on its path.
The struck officer suffered unspecified injuries, described as non-life-threatening. An ambulance transported Bingham to an area hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, the operator of the pickup, identified as Malachi Sparks Wright, 27, of Port Arthur, did not suffer injuries in the mishap. He exhibited signs of impairment, and investigators determined he was under the influence.
Deputies took him into custody, on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. They booked him into the Jefferson County Jail, where he remains held in lieu of $125,000 bail.
The Port Arthur authorities are likely to call upon a top accident lawyer to ensure the suspect faces justice for endangering the life of a lawman in the line of duty while violating a traffic regulation.
