Charles West Killed in New Braunfels Crash

Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety are still trying to determine exactly what led to a fatal crash on May 12.

A DPS representative spoke more than a week after Charles West died in a head-on collision and Stephen Litchfield suffered serious injuries.

According to accident reports, the crash happened between Purgatory Road and River Trace Drive in the 8100 block of Farm-to-Market Road 306.

On Tuesday, public information officer with the San Antonio DPS office, Sgt. Orlando “Gus” Moreno said all the contributing factors were not yet known.

He said troopers arrived on the scene of the accident around 8:30 a.m.

Preliminary investigations revealed that West, who was 63, was driving north on a wet, rainy morning in a 2015 Chevrolet pickup.

Moreno said West failed to handle a curve in the road and the vehicle swerved into the northbound travel lane. It crashed head-on into a 2018 Chevrolet pickup that was going south.

That vehicle was driven by the 59-year-old Litchfield who became trapped in his vehicle. He was rescued by emergency personnel and transported to Ascension Seton Hays Hospital in Kyle.

Jennifer Smith, the Comal County Sheriff’s Office’s public information officer, said West was pronounced dead on the scene by Mike Rust, a Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace.

Meanwhile, Moreno cautioned that all the information provided about the crash so far was preliminary. He said details could change as the investigation goes on. This means more information could be provided in later accident reports.

Moreno also reminded drivers to ensure they follow the state’s traffic laws, limit distractions, control speed, and adjust their driving during bad weather.

Most motor vehicle accidents result from the decisions drivers make.
