Officers responded to the traffic wreck on State Loop 7, on reports of a motorcycle rider left unresponsive after crashing in a no-passing zone. The reports did not indicate if any other casualty resulted from the crash.
Investigators determined that the victim was traveling through the northbound lanes on State Loop 7 in a motorcycle. The rider, identified as James Van Stephenson, a 46-year-old resident of Malakoff went past a vehicle in a no-passing zone, causing him to lose control. As a result, the motorbike veered into the roadway before crashing violently, ejecting the man in the process.
Stephenson suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Emergency responders arrived a short while later and found the man already dead. The justice of the Peace Belinda Brownlow confirmed the motorcyclist’s death. Police said Stephenson was not wearing a helmet when he crashed.
The accident reports failed to disclose if drugs and alcohol contributed to the crash, or if speed was involved.
