Henry Melendez to Face Charges in Connection with Death of Miesha Singleton

Four months after a deadly hit-and-run accident claimed the life of a mother of seven, a suspect has been arrested.

According to accident reports, 26-year-old Henry Melendez was taken into custody in Los Angeles by U.S. Marshals.

The Oakland Police Department confirmed this on Wednesday.

He was captured in connection with the January 17 death of 40-year-old Miesha Singleton of San Leandro.

The fatal accident took place near 98th Avenue and Bancroft Avenue in front of Elmhurst United Middle School.

It happened around 3:30 p.m. as Singleton was crossing the street to go pick up one of her children. Two of her other children were waiting in the car.

Singleton was using a marked crosswalk when Melendez tried to pass the vehicle that had yielded to allow her to go across the road.

Melendez allegedly struck Singleton with his Nissan Optima and then drove off without stopping.

Singleton died at the scene.

The authorities located Melendez’s vehicle later, but he was nowhere to be found.

Police and Crime Stoppers agreed to provide a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest.

Now that he is in custody, Melendez will be extradited to Oakland.

Police say the case has been handed over to the Alameda County District Attorney.

More details on the suspect’s charges could be released in other accident reports at a later date.

Since the accident happened, the city remarked the street to one lane in each direction and erected plastic barriers.

Singleton’s family may have the right to file a wrongful death lawsuit.
