Police in Houston, Texas say rain contributed to the rear-end collision that claimed the life of 43-year-old Donald Carter on Tuesday morning.
The accident took place along North Loop East, accidents reports said.
Carter was traveling east in a Honda Accord when he exited the highway for Homestead Road around 4 a.m.
As he drove on the feeder road, he lost control of his vehicle on the slippery roadway and crashed into an 18-wheeler that had stopped on the shoulder with its hazard lights flashing.
Police officers said Carter was trapped inside his car. A rescue truck was summoned to free him, but he died at the scene.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured. The individual’s name was not released in accident reports.
Police believe Carter lost control of his car because the road was wet.
Family members said he was a father of four.
Carter’s father Ray Dow said his son meant the world to him and he still couldn’t believe his death was real.
Bad weather, especially rain, is one of the most common causes of car accidents across the country.
Based on statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 5,000 fatalities and 400,000 injuries each year are due to weather conditions.
Anything from a light shower to a heavy downpour can cause slippery, dangerous conditions. The first ten minutes after light rain begins is often the most dangerous since the rain mixes with oil on the surface of the road.
Heavy rain can lead to poor visibility.
