Scooter Rider Mario Winters Killed in Fatal Police Car Collision

A man riding a motorized scooter was fatally struck by a Chicago police car. The incident took place on the night of Wednesday, July 8 as per preliminary accident reports. The unfortunate victim was identified as Mario Winters, aged 33.

According to the details shared by the authorities, the fatal collision occurred on the Far South Side in West Pullman. Winters was riding his scooter in the 11800 block of the South Halsted Street. Three law enforcement officers with the Chicago police were traveling southbound on the street in an unmarked Chicago police car. They were carrying emergency equipment with them. However, the police have not yet confirmed what kind of emergency they were responding to.

At about 10:30 p.m. the unmarked car carrying the three officers struck Winters. He sustained critical injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. His identity was later confirmed by the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The three officers remained largely safe in the collision and incurred no notable injuries. Chicago Police Department has launched an internal investigation into the incident, led by the Major Accidents unit of the department.

It is also common for such incidents to be investigated separately by the Civil Office of Police Accountability. However, for now, COPA has not issued any statement as to whether or not it is also investigating the fatal and unfortunate incident.

For now, the officers involved have not been relegated to desk duty but this may change as the final accident reports are compiled.
