Authorities have identified the bicyclist killed early Monday in a hit-and-run crash on Chicago’s West Side.
Seventy-two-year-old Walter Williams Jr., of Lawndale, was pronounced dead at a hospital after the wreck, which occurred shortly after 2 a.m. in Lawndale, according to the Chicago Police Department. No other injuries were listed on car accident reports available Monday evening.
Authorities said Williams was riding a bike in the 1500 block of South Central Park Avenue at about 2:20 a.m. Monday when he was struck by a white sedan. Car accident reports state the driver did not stop to render aid and drove away from the scene.
Emergency medical personnel transported Williams to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he later was pronounced dead, authorities said. Officials from the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Williams.
Police said they located a white vehicle with damage that matched the description of the suspect’s vehicle. One person, who was not identified in car accident reports available Monday, was questioned by officers.
The incident remains under investigation by the Chicago Police Department. Authorities haven’t said whether they suspect the involvement of contributing factors like intoxication, excessive speed or inattentive driving.
No charges or citations have been announced by authorities.
