On Monday, July 13th, the Nevada Highway Patrol released details of the solo crash that injured a teenage driver and killed her passenger on Interstate 80 in Pershing County, Nevada. The car accident report listed 18-year-old Elyza Leon of Winnemucca as the survivor.
The NHP investigators said in the car accident report that their preliminary investigation uncovered that the crash happened near the mile marker 156 on Sunday, July 12th. Leon was westbound on the interstate in a gray Nissan Maxima when she left the paved part of the roadway into the dirt median.
The teenager struck a construction barrel, overcorrected, traveled across the westbound lanes, ran off the roadway, and overturned. Leon suffered significant injuries, and medics took her to Humboldt General Hospital for treatment. The investigators said that her passenger, an unidentified female teen died at the scene.
The NHP also revealed that neither the driver nor her passenger was wearing their seat belts when they crashed, causing them to get ejected from the Nissan. The investigation is ongoing, and there’s no additional information at this time.
According to the Center for Disease Control, motor vehicle accidents is a leading cause of teenage deaths in the United States. The center states that teenagers and young adults compared to other age groups have the lowest number of seatbelt usage.
Half of the number of young drivers and passengers who died in car crashes were unrestrained. The center believes that the states can reduce the number of fatalities among teens by enforcing primary and secondary laws regulating the use of a seatbelt when in transit.
