Karen Starks Injured in Route 251 Accident

One person suffered injuries following a vehicle crash on Route 251 over Interstate 39 in the Peru area of Illinois on Thursday, July 16th. The La Salle County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Karen Starks, a 73-year-old resident of the city.

Deputies said they received a call about the crash a little before 10:30 a.m. The preliminary investigation disclosed that Starks’ car and a vehicle driven by 54-year-old Jill Hurst of Peoria collided for unknown reasons.

The woman sustained injuries, and the medics took her to Illinois Valley Community Hospital for treatment. Hurst was unscathed from the accident, and the police cited her for failing to reduce speed to avoid a collision. There is no additional information.

Speed is one of the leading causes of motor vehicle crashes in Illinois and other parts of the United States. A driver who drives too fast for road and weather conditions might end up in a car crash that can lead to fatal consequences and problems with the law.

Prosecutors charge a driver who fails to maintain the speed and crashes, with failure to reduce speed. At other times, a person who was not speeding but was unable to slow down in time to avoid an accident would also get charged with the offense. The two depend on the circumstances of each case.

Under Illinois law, it is a petty offense and does not carry a severe punishment. Offenders get to pay a fine and have points against their driver’s license.
