Christian County Police Release Details of Collision that Killed 17-month-old Knox Gaton

The Christian County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois, investigates a two-vehicle collision that claimed the life of a toddler in the county. In a press release on Monday, July 27th, sheriff officials disclosed that 17-month-old Knox Gaton was the only fatal victim of the crash.

Facts from the car accident report placed the collision’s time at approximately 6:15 p.m. on Friday, July 24th. The sheriff’s office said that 20-year-old Chase E. Gaton of Stonington began the chain of events that led to the collision. The driver was behind the wheel of a 2008 Chevrolet pickup truck heading south on 2000 East Road.

As Chase approached the roadway’s intersection with 350 North Road north of Rosamond, a 2017 Dodge Ram crashed into him. The second vehicle was pulling a loaded trailer with 21-year-old Tyler A. Buester of Noble behind the wheel. The police said that the man failed to yield the right of way to the Dodge at the intersection, causing it to strike the Chevrolet on the passenger side.

Knox was in his car seat on the passenger side, and the collision’s impact left him severely injured. The medics rushed him to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, where he passed away at 1:02 a.m. on Saturday, July 25th. The crash ejected the front passenger Jacob A. Bright, 24, of Taylorville, and an air ambulance conveyed him to St. John’s Hospital in Springfield for treatment of severe wounds.

Chase sustained minor injuries and received treatment at Pana Community Hospital, while Buster went unscathed. The sheriff’s office had the assistance of the Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit, the Pana Fire Department, and Pana Ambulance.
