The California Highway Patrol officer injured last month in a traffic collision on 10 Freeway in the Alhambra area of California has been identified. The updated accident report released by the agency on Thursday, July 30th, revealed the man’s name as Armando Portillo of Taft.
The CHP said that the accident, a chain-reaction collision, happened around 1:25 p.m., on Sunday, June 21st. The events leading to the occurrence began when Portillo parked his vehicle behind a BMW and stood on the right shoulder of the freeway’s westbound lane.
A vehicle then made an unsafe lane change from the No. 2 to the No. 3 lane, cutting off a Toyota RAV4. The act caused the SUV to veer to the right and collide with the patrol car. The collision’s impact made the Toyota strike the BMW, which ultimately hit the officer.
Portillo sustained extensive and severe injuries, including a severe concussion and large lacerations. Medics rushed him to the hospital in critical condition, and the update did not state the man’s current health status. The CHP said that the investigation remains active and they will release another update when they determine the cause of the occurrence.
Traffic accidents are not uncommon in California, and they often lead to injuries and sometimes legal consequences. The latter could be criminal charges or a civil lawsuit, depending on the accident’s facts and the conduct of the parties involved before and after the collision.
