A car accident report by the Illinois State Police disclosed that a woman sustained injuries after crashing her car on Interstate 70 in the Fayette County area of Illinois. Melanie Brandenburg, 56, was the only person involved in the Monday afternoon, August 3rd, incident.
The Casey resident was eastbound on the interstate near milepost 78.5 during a massive rainstorm. The police said Brandenburg lost control of her car and slid into the center median. Medics took her to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The police cited the woman for driving too fast for conditions and issued her a ticket. There is no additional information.
Driving in rainy weather, whether drizzling or a torrential downpour, can be one of the most challenging situations to encounter. It is associated with high accident rates due to the wetness of the road and the reduction of visibility. Thus, drivers must apply the utmost care and caution when driving in such conditions..
Safety tips for navigating wet roads include double-checking to ensure that the car equipment is in working order. Check the headlights, taillights, and windshield wipers to ensure that they work when needed. Drive within the speed limit, and if possible, go a little slower as the vehicle’s reaction time is much slower when it rains.
Additionally, use windshield wipers to increase visibility, maintain a safe distance between cars, and avoid heavy braking. Watch out for standing water, let off the gas when hydroplaning, ventilate the car, and, if possible, wait for the weather to improve before driving.
