The police in Redding, California, have confirmed the arrest of a woman who struck a police officer while driving under the influence. Amanda Velazquez, 41, of Burney, remains held at the Shasta County Jail in connection with the August 23rd traffic violation resulting in injury.
Reports of the car accident provided by the Redding Police Department placed the time of the accident as 7:30a.m., on Sunday. Velazquez was driving at a high rate of speed in the area of Airport Road and Hartnell Avenue and failed to observe the stop sign at the intersection.
As a result, the motorist slammed into the cruiser of the traffic officer on duty. The impact forced the police officer’s vehicle down an embankment, with the officer pinned inside. Velazquez and the on-duty officer suffered injuries in the traffic wreck, and paramedics conveyed them to an area hospital.
Investigators found methamphetamine in the suspect’s possession. The woman later admitted to being under the influence of the substance. After receiving medical aid, Redding police officers booked Velazquez on charges of driving under the influence, causing injury.
The traffic unit of the Redding Police Department is handling the investigation into the collision. They would release updates once they are available.
Driving within the permissible speed limit can prevent the recurrence of such accidents. Avoiding the use of drugs and alcohol while driving and obeying traffic signs on roadways can also help prevent accidents and ensure the safety of road users.
