An intoxicated teenager crashed his car into a vacant restaurant in Skokie, Illinois, on Wednesday, September 2nd, and fled the scene afterward. Joel Valdes, 18, a resident of the 8700-block of St. Louis Avenue, would need a drunk driving attorney’s service.

The Skokie Police Department said that officers arrested the suspect an hour after the occurrence at his home. They charged Valdes with driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal alcohol consumption, and leaving the scene of an accident.

Sgt. Eric Swaback said that after 1 a.m., officers responded to the former Slice of Life restaurant at 4120 Dempster Street to report a two-car crash. The preliminary investigation showed that both cars were heading east when one left the road and crashed into a brick building.

The two drivers did not sustain injuries, and the other motorist remained at the scene and cooperated with the authorities. Swaback said that Valdes received citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and no proof of valid insurance in addition to the DUI charges. He is due in court on Tuesday, October 13th.

Under the California Vehicle Code, it is illegal for a person to drive after consuming alcohol or any other intoxicating compound. For persons below the legal drinking age of 21 years, it is an offense for them to operate a motor vehicle with .01% blood alcohol concentration in their system.

Adults from 21 years and above must not have up to .08% BAC, and commercial and school bus drivers must not have up to .04%. Punishment for breaking this rule include jail time, fine, driver’s license revocation, and compulsory alcohol reeducation program.
