On Tuesday, September 8th, the woman who violated Scott’s Law and caused an injury accident in Grundy County, Illinois, received her punishment. Sahar Abdulla, 22, of Orland Park was sentenced to 180 days in Grundy County Jail and compulsory mental/medical treatment for alcohol usage.

The punishment also includes alcohol consumption prohibition and she would serve 30 months probation. Abdulla pled guilty to passing an emergency vehicle while causing death or injury, a Class 4 felony.

According to the Illinois State Police, on May 22nd, about eight tow truck drivers were assisting at the scene of three accidents on Interstate 80 between Minooka and Morris. The defendant drove into the area and failed to yield to a police vehicle.

The woman kept driving through the crash site and struck four tow truck operators. The accident report revealed that one of the truck drivers remained on Abdulla’s car’s hood. She kept going and passed other tow trucks with their emergency lights activated.

A white GMC Street Sweeper helping the police clean the earlier crash site traveled westbound in the same location. The vehicle attempted to make a U-turn to the eastbound lane when the defendant’s car struck its front driver’s side.

After the collision with the GMC, the tow truck operator on Abdulla’s hood ended up in the center median. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and medics transported him to a local hospital. The woman and the other drivers did not sustain any wound.

Scott’s Law, also known as “Move Over Law,” requires drivers to reduce speed and switch lanes to give first responders on the side of the road more space when their hazard lights are flashing. It became effective in Illinois in 2000; violators are issued citations and they are required to pay a fine.
