On Thursday, September 24th, a Cook County court ordered that the man arrested for a fatal hit-and-run accident in Chicago, Illinois, should remain in jail until he pays his $200,000 bail bond. Demetre Turner, 39, a street preacher, would need representation from a car accident lawyer.

The accident happened more than a year ago at Back of the Yards. The Cook County prosecutors said that the suspect struck Mister Lucky-Tyrone Pearson, 39, when he stopped to pick up something after leaving a footlocker in the 4700-block of South Ashland Avenue.

The incident happened on July 26th, 2019. At the time, the report showed that the victim landed on the hood and windshield of Turner’s red Chrysler PT Cruiser. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said that he sustained severe injuries and died two weeks after the occurrence.

The suspect fled the scene and later took the Chrysler to an auto shop for repair without reporting the accident. The prosecutors said that the man was not the car’s registered owner, and he did not have a valid driver’s license.

A motorist and another passerby who witnessed the crash identified the man in a photo array. The passerby recognized Turner as the man who frequently preached at 47th Street and Ashland Avenue.

Assistant District Attorney James Murphy said that the suspect approached the witness two days later and mentioned the streets’ code to stop the individual from snitching. The Chicago Police had a warrant for Turner’s arrest since last October but were unable to take him into custody until Tuesday, September 22nd.

The man is facing a charge of failure to report an accident. He will return to court on Wednesday, October 14th.
