Hit and Run Driver Kills Five-Year-Old Boy

A car accident in Big Bear Lake culminated in the death of a 5-year-old boy.  The boy had been crossing Lakeview Drive with his mother and 11-year-old brother when a driver sped through the intersection of Bartlett Road near Pine Knot and struck his family. The threesome was returning from an outing at the lake at 8: 25 p.m. Thursday evening when the accident happened.  Witnesses say that the driver stopped briefly before speeding off. He was driving a late model GMC or Chevy 2-door Tahoe (1999 or 2000) with tinted windows.

The boy, named Kushan Bhandari, was transported to Bear Valley Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.  The child’s mother Sujana Bhandari, 32, and his brother 11-year-old Kushal Bhandari were airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center.  Although both sustained serious injuries they are expected to survive.

There are numerous reasons why this case is tragic.  Not only was a young boy killed, the man who committed the crime fled and left the injured there to die.
